We are pleased to present the first in a series of planned events focussed on the politics of Turkey. With the ongoing conflict in Syria, and unrest continuing in the region, this seminar will examine recent developments and their impact on Turkish politics and society. Dr Bezen Balamir Coskun and Professor Alpaslan Özerdem will discuss Turkey’s relations with the Middle East and the West, particularly in respect of the Syrian conflict. This session will be chaired by Baroness Morris of Bolton OBE, DL.

Speakers Biography

Baroness Morris of Bolton, OBE, DL

Conservative Party politician

Baroness Morris is a Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords, Vice-President of the Conservative Middle East Council, and currently serves as the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Jordan, Kuwait and the Palestinian Territories.

Dr Bezen Balamir Coskun

Associate professor of international relations

Bezen Balamir Coskun is an associate professor of international relations. She teaches courses on theories of international relations, security studies, Middle East security and Turkish foreign policy. Her main research interests are theories of international relations, security studies and conflict resolution with a geographical emphasise on the Middle East region.

Prof. Alpaslan Özerdem

Co-Director of the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations, Coventry University

Alpaslan Özerdem is Co-Director of the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations, Coventry University, UK. He specialises in the politics of humanitarian interventions, disaster response, conflict prevention, reintegration of former combatants and post-conflict state building. He is also President of Centre for Strategic Research and Analysis (CESRAN), a UK based think-tank.
